1. Will the Midtown Pregnancy Support Center refer for abortion?
No. As Christians, we recognize and affirm the biblical teaching that the unborn child is a living human being. However, we recognize that abortion is a legal option. We, therefore, are ready to provide the information necessary to understand all options available to women. We avoid the use of scare tactics and emotional appeals.
2. Is the Midtown Pregnancy Support Center a political organization?
No. The MPSC was established solely for the purpose of serving the emotional, spiritual, and material needs of women facing an unplanned pregnancy. We do not involve ourselves with political or judicial activities in the areas of women’s rights or abortion. While we believe that some activities might be meaningful and productive in their own right, they do not fall within the purposes of the Center. The Center stands firm in its exclusive mission of Christian charity.
3. Do you try to “preach Christianity” to your clients?
No. The Midtown Pregnancy Support Center welcomes clients from any religious background and tries to meet them on their own spiritual ground, wherever that may be. We do, however, welcome questions about why the Center exists and the basis of our principles.
4. How will the pregnancy test be administered?
The pregnancy test is a self-administered urine test. The peer counselor will instruct the client on how to use the test based on the manufacturer’s instructions. The client will be referred to a physician for confirmation of the test results. Our clients are asked to sign a disclaimer form that releases the Center of any legal liability in the pregnancy test.
5. What is your view on adoption?
We believe that adoption represents a loving and viable option for any mother facing an unexpected pregnancy. While the decision to place a child for adoption is a difficult one, with guidance and support many people make this positive choice. All of our clients who are contemplating placing their babies for adoption will be referred to an independent, licensed adoption agency, as will couples seeking to adopt.
6. Will the MPSC serve clients who are not working women?
Yes; however, referrals to a more appropriate agency often become necessary. The MPSC is best suited to reach professional and working women who account for 61% of abortions in NYC.
7. What if the boyfriend of a woman calls seeking support?
The MPSC offers support for both men and women. For men, trained male peer counselors are available. Both men and women are encouraged to invite their significant others to come with them. We, however, do not directly contact others without being contacted first. Men are welcome to come alone for emotional support. The Center also provides support groups for those facing unresolved feelings following an abortion (see post-abortion support).
8. To what types of agencies will the MPSC refer clients?
The MPSC refers to other community agencies and ministries that provide a variety of services with which to meet the needs of our clients holistically. The Center interviews clients on a regular basis to gauge their satisfaction with the services provided by these referral agencies. The Center’s referral list will be revised regularly to reflect client experience in resolving particular problems.
9. How long will the Midtown Pregnancy Support Center offer support to its clients?
Our peer counseling will be personalized to address the unique needs of each client. While we have no strict time frame for the relationship the client has with the Center or its volunteers, our emphasis is on enabling the woman to make a viable plan for her future and the future of her unborn child. Should the needs of a woman exceed the resources of the Center, we will provide referrals to organizations and ministries designed to provide an array of services for the woman and her family.
